The sildenafil is an active substance used in the treatment of erectile dysfunction. It exists in several dosages. Your doctor will give you a dosage recommendation based on your medical history, the medications you are currently taking, your overall health, and how the medicine will work for you.
The dosages of sildenafil
Originally marketed as Viagra® and now available in generic form, sildenafil- based tablets are available in three different doses:
- Sildenafil 25 mg
- Sildenafil 50 mg
- Sildenafil 100 mg
For whom are the 25 mg tablets?
Sildenafil 25 mg tablets are the lowest dosage. We can recommend them if you take certain medicines such as alpha-blockers to treat high blood pressure (because combined with sildenafil they can cause a drop in blood pressure and dizziness). If you are taking HIV medications, the lower dose will also be more appropriate.
Who should use 50 mg tablets?
This is the most used dosage. This is usually the one that doctors recommend to start if you are taking sildenafil for the first time.
Who can take 100 mg tablets?
100 mg is the highest dose of sildenafil. This dose is suitable for men who find that despite taking 50 mg tablet, they can not get an erection hard enough to penetrate their partner. If the 50 mg dose is insufficient, talk to your doctor before changing your dosage. In any case, it is not necessary to exceed the dose of 100 mg per day.
Can I break sildenafil tablets?
Sildenafil tablets are not scored, so it is not recommended to cut them in half. Because of their shape, it would be difficult to obtain two equal parts.
Does the dosage I need depend on my age?
The dosage you need depends on your condition, the treatments you are taking and the effectiveness of the medication on you rather than your age.
Can I increase the dosage if it does not work?
If you find that the prescribed dose is not working well for you, you can ask your doctor if it is possible to increase it. If, on the other hand, the dosage you take is too high, you can reduce it and see if a lower dose is sufficient.
Doctors still recommend trying a dosage several times before making an adjustment. Other factors (fatigue, meals, state of mind) can affect the action of the drug. It is, therefore, best to test it a number of times to be sure that it is the dosage that is not suitable.
How often can I take sildenafil?
Do not take sildenafil more than once a day. If you have sex more than twice a week, it is possible that another drug for erectile dysfunction, using another active ingredient than sildenafil is more appropriate because other active ingredients can be taken daily. It is important to discuss your needs with your doctor so that he or she offers the most appropriate treatment.
What happens if I take too much sildenafil?
The consequences can be serious because it would increase the risk of serious side effects of the drug such as a significant drop in your blood pressure or a prolonged painful erection called priapism. It is therefore very important to respect the doses prescribed by your doctor.
If you think you have accidentally taken too much sildenafil, consult your doctor immediately.
Can I combine sildenafil with other erectile dysfunction medications?
It is not possible to take multiple medications for erectile dysfunction at the same time. This will not increase the effects and put your health at risk. If sildenafil does not work for you, there are other drugs for erectile dysfunction with other active substances such as tadalafil, avanafil or vardenafil that may be better for you
